How to play Pente Grammai

These are three separate modern reconstructions. Reading another tab does not change the match you are playing.

Suggested reconstruction · Ulrich Schädler, 2009

A blocked race to the opposite sacred half

Move exactly around the ten line-ends. Ordinary occupied points block a landing; the sacred line is the only place where counters may gather.

Schädler movement and goals The route runs down the left ends, across the bottom, up the right ends and across the top. Bone gathers on the left half of the sacred middle line and Terracotta on the right. BONE GOAL TERRACOTTA GOAL
  1. Set up. Each player places one counter on every endpoint on their side of the five lines. Terracotta takes the first turn in this implementation.
  2. Throw and move. Roll one die, then move one highlighted counter by exactly that many points around the route. You may pass occupied points.
  3. Check the landing. You cannot finish on an occupied ordinary point, even if your own counter occupies it. Either sacred endpoint accepts any number of counters from both players.
  4. Movement is compulsory. If at least one move is legal, you must make one. If every landing is blocked, you miss the turn.
  5. Gather—and sometimes leave. A counter landing exactly on your opponent-facing sacred endpoint moves inward onto that half. It remains eligible to move again; if it is the only counter with a legal landing on a later throw, it must leave from that endpoint.
  6. Win. Gather all five counters on your opponent-facing half of the sacred line.

This is Schädler’s documented playable suggestion, not a recovery of the ancient rules.

The diagrams explain the implemented games. Historical background, source discussion and the evidence boundary live in the Pente Grammai evidence dossier.

Moves count every point slowly. Reduced-motion settings keep the same steps without continuous travel.
